Smith replies to Tolkien's earlier letter.Assumed to be the letter forwarded from Smith's mother, Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Mrs. Smith • C. November 1916 (#1562)[1] He is relieved to hear that Tolkien is "still alive". Tolkien is at this time recovering at 3 South General Hospital, Edgbaston, Birmingham.

He is hoping that he will have some time on leave soon and will visit Edith and Tolkien if possible.

This letter is held among the 'Tolkien Papers, Bodleian Library, Oxford'.
