On 7 July, Tolkien was examined at the Medical Board and was declared unfit for general service but was fit for 'home service'. He is ordered "to return to O.U.T.C.Officers’ University and Technical Classes[1] Oxford to complete his course" the Ministry of Labour will be informed.

He is then informed on this day that he is released from military serviceTaking affect the following day, 16 July 1919[2] and should attend the Dispersal Unit at Fovant, Wiltshire on 15 July to collect his forms.See further, Chronology, pp. 116-7, entries for '7 June 1919', '8 July 1919' and '15 July 1919'[3]
