Gordon writes to Tolkien on various matters. Tolkien will reply to this letter informing Gordon that he is retiring from the project. What Gordon says that might have helped Tolkien arrive at this decision is not currently known.

Hammond and Christina Scull inform us that Gordon writes to Tolkien [this letter]; Tolkien replies to Gordon with the news he is retiring from the Clarendon Chaucer project [ Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to George S. Gordon • ?May 1924 (#1704)]; 15 May: Gordon informs Sisam; 15 May: Sisam replies to Gordon on the news of Tolkien leaving the project.
