TCG Letter #1870

From
Charles Furth
To
J.R.R. Tolkien
Date
15 April 1937
Type
Unknown
Transcript
Partial
Charles Furth writes to Tolkien. He makes mention that the margins around the Hobbit illustrations will be adjusted before the final printing and apologizes that Tolkien's preferred 'moon-letters' had not been used. He does not understand how this had been overlooked. Aside from the red, the jacket is "admirable". Removing the red would give greater clarity and would make the mountain look less like a cake. Furth goes on to suggest that the runes be against a green background. He returns the original artwork for Tolkien to redraw and will send a dummy of the book so that Tolkien has the correct proportions.
Notes
A significant amount of this letter is quoted in Hammond's Bibliography, p. 12.
