Tolkien writes to John Roberts, apologising for the delay in publishing the third volume of The Lord of the Rings. He describes the third volume, regrets his failing in not providing an index, and looks forward to putting in order "the legends of the First and Second Ages" and expresses delight that Roberts has enjoyed the book so far.

The letter was sold at Bonhams (Sale 16204 - Printed Books, Maps, Manuscripts and Photographs, 4 Nov 2008) for £4,560 including buyer's premium. The listing included quotes from the first page and a full reproduction of the second page.
