Rayner Unwin writes an open letter to Publishers' Weekly, in response to an article that had been published in the 14th March issue. He disputes claims made by Ace books that they were willing to pay royalties "from the start", that GA&U would have insisted that Tolkien only be paid a quarter of the standard royalties, and that Ace would ever be granted permission to print more copies of Tolkien's works, as those rights have now been licensed to Ballantine Books. He points out that Ace has distracted Tolkien from any creative writing for the past six months, dealing with the Ace "moral piracy".
