Tolkien replies to Mabel Day's letter from December 1944 Letter from Mabel Day to J.R.R. Tolkien • December 1944 (#2480)[1] and a message from January. He remarks that he is not good at answering letters promptly, even though he spends most of his time at his desk. Day had asked if he could travel to London on 16 January for a meeting of the Early English Text Society, but he remarks that Fridays are not good for him due to his wife's ill-health and commitments to other meetings at Oxford. He notes that he is free on Wednesday and Sunday during term time. He is sorry to hear of the news of Dr. Flower's health and suggests C.T. Onions as a successor. Day had mentioned W.A. Craigie and while Tolkien prefers Onions, he remarks that he has warm regard for Craigie due to his work on the Ancrene Wisse. He goes on to say that his transcript is typed except the "first few folios".
