To
J.R.R. Tolkien
Date
7 December 1953
Type

Transcript
Complete
C.S. Lewis is reading volume one of The Lord of the Rings. He says that he is trying to take his time but like a "boy with a bit of toffee", appetite wins. "The love of Gimli and the departure from Lothlórien is still almost unbearable." He remarks that on this reading he sees the "gradual coming of the shadow" over Boromir.

He concludes his letter saying that he has written to GA&U but even if they like his words, they should consider whether to use them as he is a "hated man whose name might do you more harm than good."
