Tolkien writes to Sir Stanley Unwin, who had just been knighted.

He asked about Farmer Giles of Ham. And remarks on his progress to The Hobbit sequel among other things.

In portion not found in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, Tolkien says that this period had nearly driven him "near to a real breakdown". He slept and ate for three weeks, short of the six months suggested by his doctor. Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Sir Douglas Veale • 20 March 1946 (#2509)[1]
