Tolkien also sends a personal letter of thanks with further details of why he could not take the leave of absence that Veale had arranged for him.

He also remarks on the "pillaging of the linguistics staff" by the University of Scotland, Norman Davis had recently resigned from his Oxford lectureship for a position at Glasgow.
