TCG Letter #2807

From
P.J. Spicer
To
J.R.R. Tolkien
Date
25 September 1950
Type
Unknown
Transcript
Unknown
P.J. Spicer of the Clarendon Press writes to Tolkien remarking that Penguin Books want to reprint a part of the Tolkien and E.V. Gordon edition of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in a series of history of English Literature books, using modern spelling. They believe this might affect hardcover sales and ask Tolkien if he can suggest a non-copyrighted text for Penguin to use.
Notes
Hammond and Scull note in Chronology that "Tolkien’s reply is not extant, but the proposal was turned down flat."
