Provenance and Authentication:
This collectible has undergone a rigorous forensic evaluation. The signatures were carefully analyzed across multiple criteria, including ink deposition, material aging characteristics, stylistic consistency, and historical alignment. The findings provide a sound basis for authenticity and historical context, and the piece is accompanied by comprehensive documentation supporting both its provenance and verification.

A personally signed copy of The Hobbit, or There and Back Again by J. R. R. Tolkien, published by Houghton Mifflin Company. The copyright page identifies this example as the Twenty-seventh Printing, preserving one of the most celebrated works in modern literature.

First published in 1937, The Hobbit introduced readers to Bilbo Baggins and the richly imagined world of Middle-earth, laying the foundation for The Lord of the Rings and permanently reshaping the fantasy genre. Its enduring literary influence has inspired generations of readers, scholars, filmmakers, and collectors around the world.

The title page bears Tolkien's signature beneath the printed author's name. The autograph displays the distinctive characteristics associated with Tolkien's handwriting, including fluid pen movement, naturally connected letterforms, balanced pressure variation, and a confident terminal flourish consistent with documented authentic examples.

Signed copies of The Hobbit remain among the most sought-after works in twentieth-century literature. Regardless of printing, examples personally signed by Tolkien are highly prized for combining one of the defining books of fantasy literature with the autograph of its visionary creator.

It does not look right to me and very few US editions of Tolkien's works were signed, raising the provenance bar even more for those. Caveat Emptor.

I don’t believe that is real. It just looks wrong, particularly the ‘k’. I notice the same boilerplate BS regarding authenticity.

We will see more and more of these, given the relative ease of plausible forgery.

A factor in several of these recent forgeries of US editions being sold by US auction houses seems to be that the 'auctioneers' are basically just online accounts with LiveAuctioneers; seemingly very new businesses with little track record.

Of course there is no guarantee that more established auctioneers don't offer forgeries too.

FWIW in the same auction as The Hobbit Trotter spotted are forgeries of Kipling, Churchill, J.K. Rowling, and others. I'm not convinced there is a single genuine signed book in the sale.

Have contacted Live Auctioneers, I don't think the ghost of Tolkien signed it in the last couple of months.

This sure seems to be in striking contrast to what the item description said
