TCG Letter #2898

From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
Miss J. Burn
Date
22 September 1956
Type
Autograph Letter Signed
Transcript
Complete
Writing to a Miss J. Burn, Tolkien remarks that he could not explain how The Lord of the Rings "grew" unless he did so as an "autobiography" and notes that Frodo's quest was "inevitable". He says that evil is so powerful that "a finite and incarnate will" could not resist.

He hopes that his longest tale, The Silmarillion can soon be put "into order", but agrees, apparently with Miss Burn that it will not very soon.
Notes
Tolkien wrote the letter on the 26th July 1956 and then mislaid it. He sent the letter on the 22nd September 1956, we have used this date for the letter. A draft of the letter was retained by Tolkien and was published as Carpenter's Letter #191 (J.R.R. Tolkien to Miss J. Burn, 26 July 1956)
