In the 1920s and 1930s J.R.R. Tolkien was the judge for the English Poem On A Sacred Subject Prize at the University of Oxford. This prize was awarded every third year for the best poem in English on a sacred theme.

One of the benefits of the prize was having the poem published by Blackwells, as we see in these three examples. There was also the stipulation that the winners had to send Tolkien a copy of their printed poem
