Tolkien mentions his forthcoming trip to Buckingham Palace to receive a CBE. He says that the Queen Mother is due to make the presentation, who he has seen several times. He had wished that the Queen was making the presentation. It turned out that she did, and he remarks he is "one of her devoted subjects and greatly admire her, though her voice is not one of her graces".
