TCG Letter #518 / Carpenter Letter #172

From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
Philip Unwin (Allen & Unwin Ltd.)
Date
12 October 1955
Type
Unknown
Transcript
Partial
Allen and Unwin proposed 20 October 1955 as the publication date for The Return of the King. Tolkien beseeched them not to fail; it was the last possible day since on the next day he had to deliver his first (overdue) O’Donnell Lecture.

In unpublished portions, Tolkien says that he will go through the volumes of the Lord of the Rings and select the few errors that are important and again mentions a slip inserted for errata in a possible reprint. He also asks if Allen & Unwin could remind him of who he has previous had copies sent to them as he may well be able to revise the list.

The letter is held at the 'Tolkien–George Allen & Unwin archive, HarperCollins'.
