Tolkien was asked to write about his teenage memories and, along with 69 other contributors, this was published in the book Attacks of Taste, compiled and edited by Evelyn B. Bryne and Otto M. Penzler.

His most treasured volume as a teenager was C.A. (Charles Alexander) John's Flowers of the Field.
