Rare opportunity to own a 1937 Hardback 1st Edition 2nd Impression Reprinted 1942 of TOLKIEN'S Middle Earth classic 'The Hobbit or There and Back Again' - no dustjacket unfortunately - in nice tidy condition with some very minor issues. Designs, endpaper maps, coloured frontispiece and drawings throughout text by the Author all present and in excellent condition. 310 pages plus 2 page Publisher ads to rear. Published by George Allen & Unwin, Museum Street, London - printed in Great Britain to 'War Economy Standard' by UNWIN BROTHERS LTD, WOKING. Green boards with black print title and design by Tolkien has very light marks to front and rear - as shown on images - with corners and edges very slightly rubbed - spine strong with some fading but still very legible and light bumping to top & bottom - overall binding strong, clean and tight. Coloured map endpapers lovely and clean with presumably book owner's name written neatly at top of front free endpaper as shown on image. There is a 'PRIZE' plate with dedication to preliminary blank page - halt-title page clean and sharp as is title page which has lovely clean condition coloured frontispiece by Tolkien. Contents including black & white line drawings by Tolkien absolutely complete, clean and tightly bound with no issues. UK bidders only please. Please pay by bank transfer if possible.
