This is a 2009 Deluxe volume of the Legend of Siguard and Gudrun by JRR Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien with cover illustrations by Bill Sanderson.
Part of HarperCollins’ long run of deluxe Tolkien titles, this is a 4th printing. Unread book in fine condition.
The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún is Tolkien’s retelling of the Norse Volsung legend, written in the style of Old Norse epic poetry. The story follows the hero Sigurd, who slays the dragon Fafnir and gains its cursed treasure and wisdom. He falls in love with the warrior maiden Brynhild, but through deception and magic he marries Gudrún instead, setting off a chain of betrayal, revenge, and tragedy. After Sigurd is murdered, Gudrún endures grief and conflict as the feuds between kings and families lead to destruction. Tolkien combines faithful adaptation of the medieval sources with his own poetic voice, emphasizing fate, honor, and the doom that follows greed and broken oaths.
