A Limited Box set of Tolkien's major works from The Folio Society (2001-03): includes The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings and The Silmarillion. Bound at Smith Settle in Otley with gold/pinkish coloured raw Indian Silk and dark brown Wassa Goatskin. Each set were individually numbered and remain highly sought after. This set are all matching numbers, 1500 of 1750. The original Subscriber's Extended Sets (from Folio Society), which came with matching numbers, are rather hard to come by. When these came into my possession they were a bit jaded. They'd been kept somewhere a bit smokey and were slightly whiffy. No visible damage to the books other than some fading of the gold leaf gilt in some places. There were a set of rather naff bookplates stuck into them also. The bookplates were carefully removed and the books spent some months under the care of an accredited Conservator to remove and adhesive residue, get rid of any smells/smoke residue from the books and slipcases and also give the gold leaf work a bit of a spruce up. The slipcases were a bit tight due to the leatherwork being a little bunched up around the area of the bindings. This, also, has been carefully remedied. They are now in lovely condition, bindings nice and tight, and the smell all but gone. The gold work has been gently restored whilst preserving the existing patina of the books. The photos DO NOT show this up very well at all, I may be able to provide better photos if you ask. No traces of the bookplates remain, and the 3 numbered certificates have been carefully preserved, although one was reinserted as a new page as part of restoration. This is not obviously noticeable. I am not qualified to give an official 'condition' but these should be considered at least 'good'... No visible page damage, bindings in excellent condition. Show some age, as detailed above. The price of these sets has been rather excessive in recent years, but they do command quite some value still. I have priced accordingly, bearing in mind the limitations of their restored condition, but please be aware there exists a Reserve. Feel free to email with sensible offers, bearing in mind that I am not a Charity! These are valuable, so I have tried to be exhaustive in my description, but please feel free to email with any questions. Will be sent Special Delivery only (gratis - this listing is expensive), however, the books should ideally be collected in person from North Leeds, LS7. I am reluctant to ship overseas, due in part to the chaos unleashed on national logistics by Brexit, but also due to the high likelihood of damage. This is entirely at buyers' risk and there will be categorically no refund or return if shipping is chosen over collection.
