Overall Condition: internally books are Good. Boards, dust jackets and slipcase are all poor and need full restoration.

DESCRIPTION

Complete in three volumes.

Each volume is in the original unclipped dust wrapper.

In the original slipcase.

'Fellowship of the Ring', both the book and dust wrapper are the 12th impression.

'The Two Towers', both the book and dust wrapper are the ninth impression.

'The Return of the King', both the book and dust wrapper are the ninth impression.

J. R. R. Tolkien's fantastically popular trilogy, one of, if not the most popular and important pieces of fantasy every written. The series follows Frodo and his fellowship as they journey through Middle-Earth on a quest to destroy a powerful ring and stop the growth of a rising dark power.

Illustrated with a folding map to the rear of each volume.

CONDITION

In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrappers, and the original publisher's slipcase.

It should be clearly obvious from the images that all 3 of the books have suffered severe external damage to the dust jackets in particular the spines. The slipcase is badly stained with a lot of edge wear and cracking along edges. The cloth boards aren’t too bad but again the spines have been affected and discoloured and the gilt lettering has faded in places. Internally all 3 books are pretty good. Fellowship Of The Ring - The binding has come away from the spine (see images). There is some damp staining to the first few pages and the last few pages but only in the binding. Mostly all three books are clean and bright throughout internally.

Dust jackets would be good but the spines have taken a beating and much of the spines have disintegrated. They must have been in a loft maybe and the slipcase and dust jacket spines took the brunt of the damp damage. Fortunately it didn’t really get into the books and they are well worth restoring. Certainly getting the cloth boards and bindings sorted shouldn’t be too much of an issue. The dust jackets and slipcase would prove a far bigger job but for sure achievable and a great project, which is why I bought them but I don’t have time or the skills but it’s something I would love to learn.

What an amazing project though and the end product a beautiful set of 1962 1st Editions. A beautiful family heirloom to past down through generations and a very safe and shroud investment piece.
