The Lord of the Rings[Allen & Unwin Publicity Leaflet: 1966]J.R.R. Tolkien Exceedingly scarce piece of Tolkien ephemera. We almost overlooked this piece in the Tolkien collection we purchased a couple of years past. It was placed in a sleeve between two sheets of acid free paper. We're never come across another publicity leaflet like it. They usually were tossed by bookstores or the order form was completed and returned to the publisher for the products offered. So it is remarkably rare and a treat for the Tolkien collector and completist. 8vo. pp4. 4 pagesIssued at the time the Second Edition of Tolkien's epic trilogy came out: "A revised edition with a newly designed jacket is now ready. It contains some of the author's amendments to the text, in addition to the long awaited indes of proper names." The enthusiastic puff quotes: Naomi Mitchison: "It's really superb science fiction." and she compares Tolkien to Malory.C.S. Lewis (Tolkien's good friend) compares him to Ariosto. There are also notes about 'The Hobbit' 'Tree and Leaf' 'Farmer Giles of Ham' and 'Tom Bombadil.' The cover has a splendid picture of Tolkien looking much like a prosperous farmer. The last page is an order form offering "The Lord of the Rings" at 75 shillings or 25 shillings a volume. This leaflet is about fine. First ed. After more than half a century, doubtful if many others exist. Just a remarkably scarce piece for your collection.
