Condition: Used.
Allen & Unwin, 4th and last printing of the first edition, on thin war time paper. Near fine book and jacket, original, unrestored jacket. One of the best copies I've seen. Very minor tattering to spine head, small pen mark copyright age, likely an inventory number of the previous owner or Society. Tasteful bookplate to blank end page: Gillian Hawtin, Secularist BA FSA, Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 1964. No other marks. You are unlikely to see as nice condition copy ever again. Buy it now. See all our Hobbits listed. About Our listingsBorn from our own collecting on-line, we became annoyed with some sellers photographs and listing information. We were one of the first sellers to put impressions numbers in the listing title so you didn't have to dig around and waste you time to find them. We never use ISBN number information, this doesn't apply to rare books. We always post photos which show the key common elements of the condition of popular titles, rather than lengthy descriptions of mostly irrelevant information. We show the spines and photo the dust jacket flat so you can see the true condition as this is usually the key feature effecting value especially in Tolkien early editions. We describe any unusual wear or abnormal damage. if there's nothing mentioned, it has none. We don't display the set in a photo where one book hides the flaws of another. We believe in complete transparency and recommend you don't buy from sellers who are misleading. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. Clipping is not unusual or damage as it was generally the bookstores who did so to mark remainders. Personal bookplates are also not usual or damage. They can in fact be removed, but we believe they add charm by a previous beloved owner. These and other points are personal preferences to some collectors and do not materially effect the value. The value is in the overall condition, like dust jackets. Nearly all our items are collector/investment grade condition, which also means very good condition compared to most copies you are likely to find. You will never seen worthless damaged copies. On condition grading, comparing to new is pointless. What you want to know is if this copy is likely to be the best that comes along or should you wait? As a specialist Tolkien dealer we only buy and sell the best or risk our reputation, you should not wait! Happy Collecting!
