The Lord of the Ringsby J.R.R. Tolkien Scarce early printings in matching jackets. Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,Seven for the Dwarf-Lords in their halls of stone,Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,One for the Dark Lord on his dark throneIn the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themIn the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.. Published by Allen and Unwin, London. 1954 (1957). This is the FIRST EDITION (ENGLISH) of THE LORD OF THE RINGS, by J.R.R. Tolkien. This set consists of fifth, fifth, and third impressions, respectively, all in ORIGINAL jackets, as designed by Tolkien. This is a very early set of the FIRST EDITION, published only two to three years after the true firsts, and very SCARCE as such. Only a few copies of editions this early are available, and few with jackets as clean as this set. The jacket for this set were obviously protected in some type of plastic coating, protecting much of the original colour, although leaving tape marks where the covers were affixed to the books. Condition: Fellowship of the Ring: Jacket has slight wear to top and bottom of spine, small piece folded down from top, with wear to tips (SEE PHOTOS). 3/4" closed tear to one side of jacket spine edge (difficult to see). Small dark stain to front edge of jacket. Not price-clipped. Book has slight lean, with identical tape marks to front and rear endpapers and slight foxing to foredges and scattered inner margins. Mark to copyright page top. Binding is remarkably tight, almost as if the book was not read. Map present and in very good condition with minor folds where attached to book. Book label of Cambridge, England, bookshop, Bowes and Bowes, to inner board. The Two Towers: Jacket very clean, with one very light stain to rear panel bottom. Not price-clipped. Book has slight lean, with identical tape marks to front and rear endpapers and foxing to foredges and scattered inner margins. Binding is remarkably tight, almost as if the book was not read. A few touches of foxing to map edges, else in very nice shape. Book label of Cambridge, England, bookshop, Bowes and Bowes, to inner board. The Return of the King: Jacket in very clean condition but for slight red bleed on bottom of front panel (SEE PHOTOS). Not price-clipped. Book has similar tape marks to front and rear endpapers with slight foxing to first few front and rear endpapers. No lean evident. Map has evidence of tape marks on one fold (SEE PHOTO), otherwise in very nice shape. Binding as in other copies tight, likely indicating the book was unread. Book label of Cambridge, England, bookshop, Bowes and Bowes, to inner board. Overall, an unusually bright set of the jackets, particularly for such an early printing from the 1950's, only three years after the first printing of FELLOWSHIP, and two years after the first printing of THE RETURN OF THE KING. A set that presents exceptionally well on the shelf, with very nice jackets. Set of first impressions in like jackets are currently selling for between $25,000 to $50,000 US. This set presents an excellent alternative from the same period, with sets of similar vintage selling for between $4600 to $6000 US. A great gift for the Tolkien collector.
