Condition: A very good set with nicely matching toning of the dustjackets. Signed on the front endpapers by the original owner and dated to 1964 showing that they were bought together at that time and are therefore an original set.
A vintage first edition set of J. R. R. Tolkien’s masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, dating from 1962 and 1963 and in very good condition. The Fellowship of the Ring, 12th printing 1962; The Two Towers, 10th printing 1963; The Return of the King, 9th Printing 1962. Published in London by George Allen & Unwin and bound in scarlet cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and Tolkien’s fold-out red and black maps of Middle-earth mounted on the rear endpapers. Jacket designs and all illustrations are by the author. These books were adapted into perhaps the most famous trilogy of movies of the 21st century to date and are regularly cited as the greatest fictional writings ever in public polls. The continuing interest in Tolkien’s works is exemplified by Amazon’s new series set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth in its Second Age. Jackets are age-toned in the white areas and the spines to look like antique parchment, which Tolkien must have intended since he left these areas unprinted (i.e. did not use white ink), so this is not sunning but the natural sepia toning of the unprinted paper with long exposure to the air. Will be posted in bubblewrap and cardboard layers to preserve their condition. Dustjackets will be protected in removable clear cellophane when delivered. CONDITION A very good set with nicely matching toning of the dustjackets. Signed on the front endpapers by the original owner and dated to 1964 showing that they were bought together at that time and are therefore an original set. The Fellowship of the Ring: about very good with light marks to the boards. A few tear repairs to the rear of the jacket with thin strips of paper, a small chip at the lower spine corner of the rear panel and a bit of wear at the corners. The book is complete and intact and looks lightly read. There is a crease down the long outside margin of page 103 that is obviously original to the book’s manufacture. The Two Towers: very good plus with fairly clean boards. The jacket has the normal toning and just a touch of wear to its corners. The book is complete and intact and looks hardly read. The Return of the King: very good with a couple of small and faint hard-to-see marks to the boards. The jacket is very good with a bit of wear to corners and the usual toning pattern. The blank rear endpaper on which the map is mounted was removed and has been replaced with a matching rear endpaper of the same size and the same paper taken from another early printing of the same book. It has a few faint marks but the repair is hard to see as is shown in the photos. The map itself is the original and has been re-attached to the replacement endpaper in the correct position. The book looks hardly read.
