THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien Three volume set, hardbound with slipcase. Illustrated by Alan Lee Published in 1992 by Harper Collins, LONDON. Deluxe Centenary Edition limited to 250 copies. EACH volume is SIGNED by artist ALAN LEE. Each volume has matching number (#180) Bound in green cloth over dark green bonded leather spine. Gilt titles and decoration. Housed in a matching cloth slipcase. 50 full page color illustration (prints on coated paper) by the artist are spread among the three books. The paper, while thin, is of good quality. All edges gilt. Ribbon markers bound into each volume. Essentially, this would be an almost new copy if it weren't for two defects: First, the cloth slipcase has a scuff on one side. Second, the bonded leather bindings do not hold up well. They rub against each other and the slipcase due to the tight fit. As a result, there is some abrasion of the dark leather along the edges of the hinge. Please see the close up photos for details. Overall, we grade this copy as very good in very good slipcase with defects as noted. Despite these defects, it is still a handsome set to be treasured. And, with a limitation of only 250 copies, it seems to be very seldom offered for sale. We will pay domestic priority mail costs including tracking and insurance.
