One of the Holy Grails of Tolkien collecting, for auction is my FIRST AMERICAN EDITION (Houghton Mifflin Company), SECOND STATE/IMPRESSION of J.R.R. Tolkien's original classic, "THE HOBBIT" published in 1938. This is a former library copy, in great condition considering the age, in a beautiful facsimile dustjacket (in removable broadart cover) and housed in its own custom slipcase! I have tried in to display the condition of this extremely rare collectible book as well as the elements necessary to prove that this is the second state of this first edition. If you require any further pictures, please don't hesitate to contact me. With the second installment of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" making record box-office, with the third and final movie coming later this year, these collectibles are bound to get more and more valuable. The "second state" or impression of this first edition was limited to 5,000 copies and can be identified primarily by 1) a seated flautist on the title page (this distinguishes it from a first state/impression); and 2) the mislabeling of Chapter VI in place of Chapter VII on page 118 (this was corrected in the third state/impression). As you can see from the pictures, this is clearly a copy of the First Edition, Second State. More about these early American printings of "The Hobbit" can be found here: Disclaimer: This is my personal copy - I am not a book dealer, so I do not offer warranties. Please examine the pictures carefully and ask any questions beforehand, as I will only accept returns if the book is not substantially as pictured. I am offering this super-hard-to-find book with NO RESERVE. I will very carefully package and ship this item FREE worldwide (using eBay global shipping). Please see my feedback and bid with confidence. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY BIDDING!!
