For sale is a first edition of 'The Silmarillion' by JRR Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien. This is the first edition published in 1977 by Allen and Unwin. This book has been re-bound by hand by Lyra's Books. This book has been bound in navy blue Chieftan goatskin leather. This is an extremely expensive and luxurious book leather with a beautiful natural grain and shine. This is without a doubt the finest goatskin that a book can be bound in! The book has a purple silk marker ribbon, purple and white endbands and purple, blue and black marbled endpapers supplied by master marbler Jemma Lewis (UK). The endpapers have a leather 'joint' between them which allows both front and back boards to be opened fully without putting any strain on the nearest pages. All three edges of the book block have been hand gilded with real gold leaf. The front and back boards have been stamped with the 'Two Trees of Valinor' design (designed by Graham MacAree) - gold on the front and silver on the back. The spine has five raised bands, gold lined by hand on either side. Between these sit the title and authors name stamped in gold. Both front and back boards have a 'blind' line worked by hand with a finishing tool. The book comes housed in a black buckram slipcase which has been lined with a navy blue suede. On the front, Tolkien's monogram has been stamped in gold. The box is made from a stong 3mm thick book board.Internally, the book is in mint condition, it looks like it has never been read.365 pages including index and appendix with original foldout map at the rear.
