Reply from HCThanks for letting us know, and my apologies for this frustrating outcome. It does appear that this flaw is present on some copies of the sets, as evidenced by comments on the forums. As is typical, the sets we received in the office look fine, so I am optimistic that it is not a widespread issue, however we are ordering some sets down from the warehouse so we can investigate.
In the meantime, do please feel able to return yours for a full refund or exchange.
Good that they have responded to you. Alas my inbox remains empty
No reply here either. Perhaps they are overwhelmed with feedback.
If I do end up getting this set, I think I will wait a few months until these issues are thoroughly addressed.
Ive got a reply from them today (id sent a pic with my original email) and theyve said they can send a new set out in the next 3-5 working days but are aware of the fault and if I can wait a few extra days they are getting some stock from their warehouse to check quality and can then send me a pristine set out. Ive opted for the latter. At this point they havent even mentioned returning the damaged set.

Can I ask which e-mail address you used to contact them?
I have had zero response so far from [email protected]
Yeah thats the email address I used. Id try and resend if I was you as I got an instant automated response then a proper reply a day later

Sounds like a fair response from them. Hopefully if the percentage of duds is high, they will go through the entire inventory and pull the bad ones out, rather than just getting some good ones for people that complain.
I wonder if the quarter binding/spine backer is a little too wide and when the boards are then assembled onto the page block it crumples, due to incorrect sizing. Wouldn't happen with hand assembly (would just bulge out a bit as you would naturally compensate), but given this will be 100% machine manufacturing, who knows? A small sizing error could probably blow out like this.
