Author J R R Tolkien Title The Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King) Publisher & Printing Details George Allen & Unwin, London, 1959-1961. Three volumes (complete), first editions and respectively the 8th, 7th and 8th impressions. All hardbacks in dutwrappers with the original red cloth binding with gilt titling to spine. 23 x 15cm each. Fellowship: 423pp + map. Two Towers: 352pp + map. Return: 416pp + map. About the Book Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power – the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth. All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring – the ring that rules them all – which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose. Condition On the whole a good set of early printings. The dustwrappers all have surface wear to the spines and to a lesser extent by the folds, they also suffer a little bit of surface grubbying. None of them have been price clipped and are all now in protective sleeves. The books: The red cloth is in very good order and all the books have clean text pages and secure binding. There is a neat and inoffensive owner's inscription in each to the ffep. Fellowship has a little spotted foxing to the pages' outer edges, Two Towers again has a little foxing and a small horizontal dent to the rear board and some offsetting to the pastedowns. Return has slightly heavier foxing to the ages' edges and to the last page of text but this is still minor. The maps in each book are in very good condition. Check out my other items!
