DESCRIPTION : Uniformly bound in original green cloth with gilt spine titles.  Includes contributions by the following :

  • J. R. R. Tolkien, vol. XIV, Ancrene Wisse and Hali Meidhad, 23pp.  An essay about the thirteenth century Middle English treatise Ancrene Wisse ("The Anchoresses' Rule") and on the tract on virginity Hali Meiðhad ("Holy Maidenhood").  This essay has been called "the most perfect though not the best-known of Tolkien's academic pieces" on p.45 of The Road to Middle-Earth
  • C. S. Lewis
    • vol. XVII, What Chaucer really did to Il Filostrato
    • vol. XIX, The Personal heresy in criticism
    • vol. XXI, Open letter to Dr. Tillyard (this vol. also includes 10pp work by T. S. Eliot)

Provenance :

  • labels on endpaper "from the library of Ernest de Selincourt" given to the Armitt library in 1943
  • Armitt (Ambleside) labels, with 31 Dec. 2024 deaccession stamps (and now fresh to the open market)
  • earlier vols. signed by one of the two Selincourt's


CONDITION GRADE : Very Good
  Labels on front endpapers as described above.
