Historical Notes
Published in November 1955, the Fourth Impression of The Fellowship of the Ring is regarded by collectors as an early issue of the original UK First Edition because it preserves the same text and typesetting as the scarce 1954 first impression. Early impressions published by George Allen & Unwin are increasingly sought after due to their historical importance and close association with the first publication of The Lord of the Rings.
Copies retaining the original dust jacket, folding map, and publisher's cloth binding are particularly desirable and represent an important opportunity for collectors of modern first editions and Tolkien literature.
