The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Puffin Books, 1961 (1st softcover edition). 284 pages, including two maps, plus list of other works by Tolkien and also 3 pages of other publications. In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. 'The Hobbit' was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and awarded a prize from the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. It has been adapted into films, starring Peter Jackson, Cate Blanchett and Orlando Bloom. The first edition softcover was a significant publication as it introduced Tolkien's work to a wider and younger audience. This edition features cover art by Pauline Baynes, who created iconic illustrations that helped define the visual representation of Tolkien's world, as well as C S Lewis' 'Narnia'. Some wear & light creasing to covers & spine. Slight lean. Pages browned.
