Seriously though, there is a lot of crap like this on eBay at the moment, and less good stuff than I have ever seen.

I think building a decent collection from scratch would be borderline impossible at present. I wonder of it will improve once the final "Hobbit" abomination has been and gone from cinemas and the "temporary" collectors get bored and move onto the next fad?

Photographs can be a powerful selling point...

Never read, just stored on a shelf since 1991 so very slight yellowing to page edges.

Nope. My 2037 100th Anniversary Edition of the Hobbit looks great on my bookshelf.

If you are a dedicated enough Tolkien Collector, you will always buy the books and have them on your shelves well in advance of their publication.

No idea what planet this seller lives on, completely mad.

These are an odd one. Half the time they go for a tenner (that's what I paid for mine) and then the other half seem to go for daft money like this. Considering the book is a just a cheap and nasty paperback with hard covers, a tenner seems like the right end of the price spectrum....
