Upcoming Books

I didn't want to make the subject too long, but I'll get to the point:

Who here will be getting the upcoming editions?? (see photos):

- The Hobbit + The Lord of the Rings illustrated editions by Alan Lee, in 4 books
- Unfinished Tales 40th anniversary illustrated edition by Ted Nasmith, Alan Lee and John Howe (standard or deluxe)

Those that have them on order, or will get them, I have a few questions for you once they're out - which can be answered via photos, or text-based response

- does this edition of The Fellowship of the Ring have the frontispiece as a fold-out sheet like the 60th anniversary illustrated edition of The Lord of the Rings did? (like this: https://www.tolkienguide.com/uploads/newbb/10_53a32f3aae7de.jpg . Image from Trotter from awhile back)
- do all 3 Lord of the Rings volumes have fold-out maps?
- does the illustrated Unfinished Tales have a fold-out map at the back? (standard and deluxe)
- does the Unfinished Tales illustrated deluxe have a frontispiece? (Usually this is the same image used for the cover of the standard edition, and the following year's calendar)

Many thanks, I know it's early, but I wanted to get the thread started. Looking forward to your responses, those applicable.

Personally planning to get the UT standard. Not planning on obtaining any of the others.

Yeah of the ones I listed I'll prolly go for the Unfinished Tales standard - or possibly even next year's paperback edition - already have HarperCollins' other standard hardback (Glaurun on cover) so it'll be for the art :P

I'm just curious how the others will look, what they'll have, etc.

I have a new rule going forward that if there is no new primary texts in a Tolkien release then I won't be buying. So I don't expect to purchase any of these. Space is at such a premium now that I have to be realistic about what are essential to me.

If I am not missing something I don't think these releases offer anything new from Tolkien himself.

That's pretty much my policy. In this case, I don't mind picking up the cheaper UT assuming the price shipped is fairly low, -- as it will have some new art and there hasn't previously been an illustrated version, but otherwise I have pretty much lost interest in obtaining any new re-releases. There are a few older items I'd like to pick up -- and I still enjoy seeing what other people collect (including the odd entirely unnecessary re-packaging). I'd rather spend the money on something my boy will enjoy these days, rather than something I'll chuck on the shelf to tick a box. I'm getting old!

Ditto - joys of being a completist.

I used to find joy in being a completist... when I was much younger. Then life happened. Sometimes I look at my numerous editions which are pretty much worthless and wonder why I ever spent my hard-earned money on them all.

IMO you need one good Tolkien edition - after all it is the story that matters. Everything else is fluff.

I’m now like some others here - if there’s no new original Tolkien material, I’m not interested.

To each their own though.

I agree, I only collect new hard-backs now and they have to be "different" to the ones that I already have, which does include illustrations, and not just the text, so just Unfinished Tales for me.

Exactly my idea as well. I used to buy everything that was labelled ‘Tolkien’, but now it’s all about quality instead of quantity, the essentials (and an occasional illustrated or deluxe edition) will do fine.

To each their own way of collecting, of course. I always enjoy seeing completists’ collections!
