I have this edition. I have no doubt (as Stu says) that this may be a borderline "leather" product only. Slipcase is also pretty flimsy; very thin book board used for construction. Nice enough as a tarted up standard release, but it's nothing more than this.

As side note: if something was "90% PVC" it would not (by pretty much any industry standards) be able to be claimed as a leather product. The use of the word "leather" in bonded leather still has the agreement (loosely) of a majority leather content.

Actually, I believe bonded leather is the one product that doesn't have any broad agreement as to what it can be made from, other than it will have some leather fibres in there. If they claim to meet the European Standard, it needs to be 50%, but if it isn't claiming to meet any standards, my understanding it can be any number they feel like. I mean, either way, it is leather fibres and plastic - it ain't leather in anything other than the name. It is the plastic you are experiencing. I always feel it is a rather dishonest material, and I would choose decent book cloth over bonded leather any day of the week.

These look nice. Worth saying that at the price, the "real leather" is likely 90% PVC (with a lot of bonded leather products, the leather is really there only to say "it is leather").

Which Tolkien book edition would you say has the “realest leather”?

Really, really impressive edition. Do you remember how much did these cost when they came out?

Got it last year (october) for £600. I think I'm the last to ever pay this price, regarding the 4 or 5 of them which has been sold in the £900 range at the beginning of this year...

They discounted them to £250(ish) several times over the years. I got my initial two copies for the full price, and I got another copy during one of the 30% off sales at £245.

It really is a very high quality edition.

It does look magnificent but I don’t think I’ll ever pay $1000 for a single book, unless it’s a one-of-a-kind item.

I kind of have resigned myself to never own one of these super deluxe CoH.
