[The Lord of the Rings], 3 vol., The Fellowship of the Ring, 1954; The Two Towers, 1954; The Return of the King, 1955, first editions, first impressions, folding map at end of each vol, original red cloth, top edges stained red, spines slightly faded, and some foxing to endpapers, small ‘burn’ hole to foot of spine of the last volume, 8vo (3)

⁂ All vols with signature mark '4' on p.49 and text block sagging in The Return of the Ring.

[The Lord of the Rings], 3 vol., first editions, first impressions, vol. 3 signed by the author on printed leaf following title, folding map at end of each volume, modern red calf, gilt, spines gilt in compartments with orange morocco labels, some light toning to spines, but generally excellent, 8vo, 1954-55.

I would urge people to do their own research on the signature if they are thinking of bidding for this item as it has no provenance or association details.

Nothing about that “signature” looks right to me.

A quick note from the Shirrifs about buying items with signatures...

You should always exercise good judgement and perform appropriate due-diligence when acquiring signed items to ensure that you are satisfied with the provenance and integrity of any item you bid on.

And speaking only for myself here. I agree that the signature looks all wrong...especially the first three letters.

Wow—I totally agree—those first three letters are very suspect.

That item should be pulled from the auction…
