Ouch—that’s a lot for that condition.

Where are we going exactly?
Soon, a 1st hobbit will cost more than a sketch of Raphael or a painting of Caravaggio?

A piece of art by Carravaggio is unique. There are 1500 copies for the 1st edition of the Hobbit out there. If Im multipying the price of this one by 1500 to make it unique, I have 177.000 x 1500, let's say 265 millions USD. Unbelievable.

I don't think your figures are correct on 1500 copies out there, there were in 1937, but I don't think they have all survived for 85 years. I am guessing more like a maximum of 500 still around, and probably only about 100 with dust-jackets.

I would wager it's even less than that.

I would agree with this calculation.

Also just because someone lists for a price does not indicate market worth. Only actual recorded sales give an indication.

I could list my copy for £1m - does not mean anyone would buy..

Good point Trotter :)
I will review my calculation then. But this is still pure madness.
Edit : I don't think Peter Harringhton keeps their books for sales for a long time. And Im guessing this will sell shortly for the asking price...

When you list yours for £1m Demis, I am listing mine for £900,000
