I have been collecting Puffin paperbacks that have either cover-art, illustrations or both by Pauline Baynes.

Puffin books are numbered, so I know up to 300 who the illustrators were for the books, but after that not sure, the only later book that I have, after #300 is Watership Down.

If anyone knows of any other Puffin books that Pauline Baynes was involved with, please post the titles.

Hi, Trotter,

Here's a list of Puffin paperbacks with Baynes covers and/or interior art, arranged chronologically and, within each year, alphabetically by author and title. The number in square brackets at the end of the line refers to the Hammond-Scull bibliography of Pauline's publications, which we've been writing for years but have often been sidetracked with Tolkien work. There's only one title in this list (Peter Dickinson, 1984) for which Pauline did interior art (as one of many artists) but not the cover (which is by Quentin Blake). Many of her Puffin titles have only Baynes covers, not interior art; some have both.

C.S. Lewis. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. 1959. [A18b]
J.R.R. Tolkien. The Hobbit. 1961. [A67]
C.S. Lewis. Prince Caspian. 1962. [A24b]
C.S. Lewis. The Magician's Nephew. 1963. [A40b]
C.S. Lewis. The Last Battle. 1964. [A44b]
C.S. Lewis. The Horse and His Boy. 1965. [A38b]
C.S. Lewis. The Silver Chair. 1965. [A33b]
C.S. Lewis. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. 1965. [A29b]
Iona and Peter Opie. The Puffin Book of Nursery Rhymes. 1963. [A73a]
William Croft Dickinson. Borrobil. 1964. [A75]
George MacDonald. The Princess and the Goblin. 1964. [A78a]
George MacDonald. The Princess and Curdie. 1966. [A93a]
Roger Lancelyn Green. The Tale of Troy. 1970. [A103]
Richard Adams. Watership Down. 1973. [A114]
Rosemary Harris. The Moon in the Cloud. 1977. [A126]
Rosemary Harris. The Shadow on the Sun. 1977. [A129]
Rosemary Harris. The Bright and Morning Star. 1978. [A130]
Allison Uttley. The Little Knife Who Did All the Work. 1978. [A72b]
Walter De La Mare. The Three Royal Monkeys. 1979. [A139]
Gwyn Jones. Welsh Legends and Folk-Tales. 1979. [A141]
Roger Lancelyn Green. Tales of the Greek Heroes. [1980?] [A151]
Mary Norton. The Borrowers. 1980. [A142]
Mary Norton. The Borrowers Afield. 1980. [A143]
Mary Norton. The Borrowers Afloat. 1980. [A144]
Mary Norton. The Borrowers Aloft. 1980. [A145]
Mary Norton. The Borrowers Avenged. 1983. [A155 note; previously a Kestrel hardback]
Mary Norton. The Complete Borrowers Stories. 1983. [A156]
Hans Christian Andersen. Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales. 1984. [A169]
Carlo Collodi. Pinocchio. 1984. [A171]
Peter Dickinson. Hundreds and Hundreds. 1984. [A170; 4 interior ills. only]
Rumer Godden. Candy Floss and Impunity Jane. 1984. [A164]
Rumer Godden. The Story of Holly and Ivy. 1984. [A172]
George MacDonald. At the Back of the North Wind. 1984. [A162]
George MacDonald. The Princess and the Goblin [reissue with new cover]. 1984. [A78b]
Anna Sewell. Black Beauty. 1984. [A163a]
Ursula Moray Williams. The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse. 1984. [A161]
Ursula Moray Williams. The Further Adventures of Gobbolino and the Little Wooden Horse. 1984. [A167]
Ursula Moray Williams. Gobbolino the Witch's Cat. 1984. [A168]
Eleanor Farjeon. The Little Bookroom. 1985. [A175]
George MacDonald. The Princess and Curdie [reissue with new cover]. 1985. [A93b]
Iona and Peter Opie. The Puffin Book of Nursery Rhymes [reissue with new cover]. 1985. [A73b]
Arthur Ransome. Old Peter's Russian Tales. 1985. [A176]
Oscar Wilde. The Happy Prince and Other Stories. 1985. [A173]

Some of these have variations. For example, the Watership Down cover art is cropped one way on the original paperback, another on the Kestrel hardback, and severely in later Puffin printings. The Ransome title, 1985, was in a larger format prior to it becoming a "Puffin Classic". Black Beauty also appeared in 1988 under the St Michael imprint, with a different, new Baynes illustration on the cover (she also did the interior art), the whole produced by Puffin Books for Marks & Spencer and sold in a special package with an audiobook of the novel on cassette [A163b]. Then there are Puffin collection slipcases with wraparound Baynes art: The Complete Chronicles of Narnia had a pink box (1965, A83a) and a green box (1974, A83b), and there's also The Borrowers Stories (1980, A146). Pauline also had commissions for interior art in Puffin hardbacks, such as The Puffin Annual Number 2 (1975, A122), The Puffin Treasury of Children's Stories (1996, A202), and The Puffin Treasury of Classics (1997, A203), and her work appeared in the Puffin Post magazine.

Good luck!
