I just picked up another copy of the Signed Limited Deluxe Children of Hurin from the Tolkien.co.uk website. As most of you know, they are now making it available to U.S. customers. It may be a blessing in disguise that this was not previously available in the U.S. since the dollar has gotten much stronger against the pound recently than it was back when the book was first released (it was 2:1 back then!). There is also a 10% off coupon code available now (TOLK01). That brings the price down to GBP 315.00 + GBP 5.00 shipping. At today's exchange rate, that is less than $500.00. I believe that is an excellent deal for a fully leather bound book signed by both Christopher Tolkien and Alan Lee. If you have the cash now, this is great investment. I would expect that these won't be around for retail sale much longer (however, the poor economy probably will hinder sales, so I may be wrong).

A quick word about using the coupon code.... I tried to use it and it gave an error message saying that the code was invalid. However, after deleting it and progressing to checkout, the 10% discount was applied and the transaction was successful.

I don't mean to sound like a saleman for Harper Collins, but having already owned a copy of this book and knowing how much I enjoy it, I want to make sure that anyone else who might love this book gets an opportunity to pick it up at possibly the best price it will be before it is sold-out.

Would be interested to hear what number they have gotten up to so far when the book turns up. My guess would be around about the 300 mark, maybe slightly lower.

Can't see a great deal more being sold in the current climate, but the price is certainly good for US customers at this point, whilst the USD is artificially high.

(I'm sure someone will confirm what number we're now on.) When I had to send my faulty copy back (at publication time), I received #153; instead of 50-odd. When I contacted HC in late February this year, sales had only crawled up to #194. Pretty slow I think; perhaps reflecting the slight overpriced nature (remember it was originally meant to be ~£250). Interested to hear how far they've got after a good year of sales...

10% discount would have been nice on the new Tales PR; unfortunatley this email came out after most people had bought it though! Just received mine tonight; haven't opened yet tho'...

Yes, I think HC did themselves no favours by putting the price up so high. Even just before publication it was going to be GBP 300 and at the last minute they squeezed another GBP 50. It really is a lovely book (and I'm very happy to have my '#3'), but in retrospect it was just too expensive and they printed way too many copies. I wonder how they will distribute the remainder once the web sales completely dry up? If they are still in the 200-300 range after a year I think it is safe to say that there is little chance of them ever selling the remainder of the copies without resorting to some really aggressive discounting (say 30-40%). I'm wondering if they will end up selling in bulk to other distributors (as I think has happened in the past with some of the super-deluxes).

Thanks for the information alpingloin.

I am surprised they have sold as far as copy number 340. At a guess (and considering that they can now sell to the USA), this edition may sell out by mid next year. Much quicker than I thought with the price at £350. Of course, Sterling has depreciated dramatically against all other currencies in the past number of months, so I suppose it has been getting cheaper as the year has progressed. And with the additional 10% discount coupon and their large reduction in postage charges (previously £36 to Europe), it has become more reasonable to purchase.

Yes, Remy, I agree that it shouldn't require some super aggressive marketing (like put them on Amazon) to sell these out within the next 6 to 12 months. The problem with selling them is that you actually have to have a functioning website in order to sell product. It seems that providing such a site has proven difficult for HC. I suppose I could see them continuing to discount the book for some time (maybe even reduce the price to 300GBP) in order to move the last hundred or so.

The new Tolkien.co.uk website is offering 20% off now. That brings the Super Deluxe CoH down to 280GBP. I guess the discounts have deepened already!

From their forum...

"To celebrate the festive season, and to thank you for your patience, we are offering you a special discount of 20% off all titles ordered from the website up to the end of December 2008. All you have to do is enter the discount code TOLK22 in the discount code box at the shopping basket and 20% will be taken off the total amount of your books."

Alp,

Couldn't pass up that 20% Signed Limited Deluxe Children of Hurin discount coupon of yours, thx friend.

Placed an order for 2 copies this day (keep one, sell one strategy). The 20% discount should help move the remaining copies along, I know it's motivated me. Should prove to be interesting to see where the numbers are when mine arrives. Will post #'s when they arrive in 7-10 days, perhaps less. High numbers will be better than no numbers.

$1,033.00 -20% = $826.40 / 2 = $413.20 per copy.

Per copy savings = $103.30. $206.60 realized for the two, not too shabby..!

The savings is sweet,,, still.. it's well over $400 a book, a little on the stiff side, but should double/triple in the next 5 years on the weight of the signatures alone. Not to mention that the CoH is a destined classic in it's own rite... ever bring CoH to the big screen.. it'll smash all the records (IMHO).

CoH was a great read, this deluxe edition with two great signatures make it a great collectible, am pleased to add it to my collection.

TT
