Hi, all! I've been collecting the volumes illustrated by Alan Lee, such as Beren and Luthien and the Children of Hurin, and I've encountered two variations. One variety has a glossy cover, and the other has a matte, paper texture, with gold lettering, and is slightly taller, so that it matches the height of the "Illustrated by the Author" series. The problem I've run into is that both versions have the same cover art, and internal illustrations, so that I have been unable to tell which version I am purchasing when ordering online. Obviously, finding them in-store would solve this, but I have, as yet, not encountered them in any of my local bookstores. Does anyone here have any ideas of where I could find the taller, matte cover versions, or what I should look for online so I can differentiate between them?

I presume you are talking about UK Editions.
If you buy new from Harpercollins, Amazon etc (or local bookshop) - you will get Matte DJ's. Older printings had Glossy Covers. So just make sure to buy new from retailer.

I had assumed the opposite, that the older ones were the matte, and that they had since transitioned to the gloss, so thank you very much for this! I know what to look for now.
