I’m really crossing my fingers that this is true. I’m so disappointed to have missed this, because it is squarely in my budget, and anything much higher than this is totally out of my budget. Many book sellers on eBay are charging this for 2nd edition hobbits.

I think it is important to distinguish between "charging" and "asking". I see a lot of books that simply aren't moving. That said, I would expect a really nice early second edition with a really nice jacket to go for more than this. I actually think that 1946 went for fair value, really -- and that's something we are only recently starting to see happening again.

Yes - when there is a best offer on the listing - Ebay seems to show the starting bid price rather the price that the item actually sold at (when the offer is accepted).

eBay is such a trainwreck.
£1200 is still a *lot* less than this would have gone for a year ago (though I do feel I have seen Best Offer prices list correctly when they are higher than the start price. No guarantee that is still the case or always the case. I've also seen the prices appear to come good after a couple of days).

I made an offer on a book last week 20th June (higher than starting price). It was accepted. The starting price is still showing now rather than the price it sold at.
