(The covers on this set include colored foil inlays of a ring in the center of the main image and the title below. My scanner does not pick up colored foils well, but you can see hints of what they look like in the center volume. The colors are yellow, red, and green.

zionius. I just bought a copy of the 2025 Chen Sen Popular Science Press "translation". I'm not sure whether this is a new "simplified translation" for younger readers or a simplification of a previous translation. (My Chinese is via Google Translate, of course). In comparing the first paragraph of Fellowship to other translations, it looks to be much simpler in structure and the comment about the rumors of how Bilbo acquired his wealth has been turned into a direct quote. Can you clarify a bit for me what the nature and history of this "translation" is? Thank you.

This is a heavily abridged translation , as can be easily seen from the length. The blurb says "This edition is a young readers' adaptation of the novel. While preserving the essence of the original, it has been carefully adapted for readers aged 8 to 18." Chen Sen is credited as "Translated and edited by" or "Compiled by"(编译).

Most new translations published since 2024 are craps, and some are actually "adopted" from earlier Chinese ones (ie. content spinning). It is hard to say whether this one is the case without careful comparisons; the sample pages appear to suggest it is original.

This is the third abridged Chinese version of LR. The second one is 9787545586268 which you already own. The first one is in a collection of children’s literature published in 1992 (7535807178), potting LR in 20 pages. It also contains abridged Hobbit in 7 pages, and two interesting reviews. zionius. Thanks! I suspected as much, but I knew you would have a much more accurate assessment. I'm glad you mentioned 9787545586268. I bought that back when new Chinese translations were falling like rain and didn't notice that it was also an abridgement. I'll be sure to mark it as such.
