They don’t go for that high a price. That’s quite the eye watering asking price.
I remember HC struggled to sell all these back when they were released. Ended up handing them off the Blackwells and other retailers to sell off for a discount.
The 12% is only paid on first £5000 but point taken as didn’t spot its in $
Think overpaid for it as price paid wasn’t a dealers price really, be interesting if it sells

There's two other ones listed on eBay right now and they are both $699 (about what I normally see this listed for), and two on AbeBooks for ~$800 and ~$1000.

I have seen the Alan Lee box sold privately on FB for eye watering sums so the quotes here don't surprise me. From c. $400 to 600. Insane!
I am not a speculator and prefer, if I have something I don't want, to either give it away or make some kind of deal that suits both parties. I nearly did a swap for my copy in exchange for the cost of History of Middle-earth boxes that were released recently, at whatever price I secured them for. The item party would have ended up paying approximately €380 for the book but opted in the end to buy it outright so that they would not have to wait. They paid $440 privately.
EDIT: I will add that 800 - 1000 is very much overpriced and I doubt, as Mr. Underhill has pointed out, that these are selling for those amounts.

Sure, but none are actually selling for those amounts…also what makes this listing interesting if you know of four others that are overpriced just like this one?

It's the lowest-priced one listed among two major sites. That's interesting to me. I'm not on the trainwreck that is Facebook these days so apologies if I don't see the hoard of these that ostensibly sell for $400 or whatever. Go ahead and delete my post if you think it's "not interesting", but not sure why you have such a problem with it.

No need to get defensive “Interesting” is a subjective term, if you think that listing is interesting that’s great. However if you’re going to post in the forums about it, you must be prepared to be challenged. We all converse with each other here and ask each other questions, sometimes challenging questions. Makes us better collectors. If you post about anything, others may have their own thoughts…

This is valuable information to try and get a sense of where the market is on these.
I bought mine new (from Blackwells I think) and I think I paid $80…but not 100% on that. It was less than $100 though.
