Odd remark there. My impression has certainly been that the reception to this book has been good, both in terms of its content and its sales. It's listed as "Low Stock" and "Most Popular" on harpercollins.co.uk.

It is selling well, is well received by most readers I know and is being prepared for a reprint within a month of publication.
I am afraid that some people, lots of reviewers among them, feel the need to be edgy and diss authors like Tolkien.
Copy signed by Richard Ovenden arrived yesterday in fantastic shape. Better than the unsigned one, really.

Occasionally they are right, but mostly it is about what generates clicks for the publication - and generally hating everything gets more views. Look at people like Nerdrotic (and his unpleasant ilk) in the TV show/movie commentary space - I've never heard him say anything positive about anything, and he has a huge following because of it.
Signed copies have sold out at Blackwell's. Unfortunately my packaging was very poor. Worst I've ever seen from them....

Very sorry to read that. I hope they were able to provide a replacement but your note that it is sold out does not sound hopeful.
I have had very mixed results ordering from Blackwell's and no longer use them. Too many books were badly packaged.
Same. No replacement on my end either … and after letting them know multiple times they still won’t change the way they package their books (completely nude/without any wrapping of any sort smh)
If it is damaged and can’t be replaced, require a refund. I will be if/when mine turns up knackered.
Mine arrived with only a very, very minor scuff/surface layer chip to the bottom of the spine. Certainly nothing to lose sleep over. The signature was not smudged and the book unbumped. Terrible packaging though. Rough cardboard envelope and nothing else.
