Able to start order a bit early but took couple of trys to complete order. Even with shipping to Canada set couldn't complete order becasue of US billing address. Fixed that and order went through. About the 169th sold.
How did you find out that you're 169th? I have the web page with the closed deal still open. And the confirmation e-mail too in the meanwhile. There's no order number there. It'd be interesting to know to pump up my adrenaline

You can look on the HC website to see how many have sold at the time of your purchase and extrapolate from there.
Yes fully agree EmilK and like Trotter mine was free for UK shipping which I would have expected to be the case for Europe too. Hopefully it will be worth the extra for you!
Right now it says "244 books were sold recently" (but only if I accepted cookies in an incognito tab, I think my adblockers block the HarperCollins cookie consent banner). This may indicate that about 25% of the stock of 1000 has been sold. Or is this the number of books that were sold prior to my purchase?
Although I do not wish to speculate, if this is the current number sold, it is interesting to contemplate that it has been around 2.5 hours since I was able to add it to basket and buy, and "only" one fourth have been sold. This is in contrast to the Folio Society editions of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit that sold out relatively rapidly, although I seem to recall that the advertisement was more widely spread, that the community attitude was more positive than for this one (many recent comments on the r/tolkienbooks have been neutral or negative) and of course that Folio Society has a quite broad audience above and beyond Tolkien collectors.

What’s the consensus — does the number you get correlate with when you placed your order, or is it random?

My Tolkien journey began as a teenager, with the 1991 paperback edition of The Hobbit, followed by the 1995 single volume paperback edition of The Lord of the Rings, and a Kindle copy (yes, I know!) of The Silmarillion in 2011.
As my son approached a suitable age, I bought the Jemma Catlin-illustrated edition of The Hobbit, and a reproduction of Thor's map (complete with UV-activated moon-runes). It's probably at that point that I became interested in signed/first/special/deluxe editions, and last year I bought the boxed set of the illustrated editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and a second-hand copy of Journeys of Frodo by Barbara Strachey (a wonderful book that I firmly believe ought to be reprinted).
I sometimes muse about acquiring a first or signed edition of Tolkien, and my YouTube history is peppered with videos by the likes of Nerd of the Rings, and Tom Ayling. As a result, a few weeks ago, the Algorithm showed me Harper Collins' promotional video for this clamshell edition, and I decided that this is it. This opportunity shall not pass!
This morning, I scouted out the Harper Collins checkout process, and determined that Apple Pay would likely be the quickest method of completing the purchase. At approx. 12:52pm, I sat down and brought up the page, ready to refresh when the hour chimed, only to be presented with an Add to Basket button, which was ruthlessly smashed within milliseconds! A moment later, I was authorising the payment on my phone, and it is done! I look forward to the arrival of my Precious in the coming weeks.

I thought I was blind, but your reply encouraged me to try harder. The counter is displayed in Chrome, but not in Firefox. It shows 244 now.
UPDATE: In the meanwhile I read EmilK's answer and I think that it must be the ad-blocker or cookie blocker, which I configured probably too aggressively.
