Won’t affect it at all. The first edition is expensive due to collectors, not readers.

Oh yes, couldn't agree more. The '81 volume will remain extremely desirable, especially the volumes without a price clipped jacket.

Yes, unfortunately I think this will absolutely be the case. Look, for example at the Saga of King Heidrek. Different price range from Exodus, obviously, but the widespread availability of the new paperback has not affected sale prices of the first edition copies, from what I've seen.

And same with 1992 Purple Unfinished Tales. You are still paying close to £1000 for a fine copy, despite the (slightly second rate) reversible dust jacket version released in Home boxed set #1. The new version had no impact on collectibility of the old one.

Absolutely...and the Facsimile 1st/1st GA&U Hobbit doesn't impact the value of the true firsts one bit...but we could do this all day ;)

Not always true however, everyone remember how much the 2003 Foster's Guide was going for (multiple hundreds of dollars) before the 2022 edition was released? Prices for the '03 have come down (although still always sells when one comes up).

Yeah, the Foster is odd. It was selling for a lot even after the 2022 was released, and then the market suddenly seemed to be satisfied a year or so ago, and the price dropped to £25 - £50, with many not selling on the first listing. I think that was a great example of the "sale->long delay (appears rare)->available used (commonly available)" cycle. Suddenly enough came to market that the illusion of rarity was busted (it did have three prints, after all). Another book that I expect to see that happen to is the Blue Wizards UT. Damn thing had 4 prints and people are paying £250+. There will come a time in the next 10 years when they are a dime-a-dozen.

It is odd indeed that the 03 Fosters has dropped as it has. You’d think that as it has slightly different illustrations from the later edition it may have kept a higher value to collectors.

Indeed - and the image reproduction and size is far better than the 2023.
