My Tolkien journey began as a teenager, with the 1991 paperback edition of The Hobbit, followed by the 1995 single volume paperback edition of The Lord of the Rings, and a Kindle copy (yes, I know!) of The Silmarillion in 2011.
As my son approached a suitable age, I bought the Jemma Catlin-illustrated edition of The Hobbit, and a reproduction of Thor's map (complete with UV-activated moon-runes). It's probably at that point that I became interested in signed/first/special/deluxe editions, and last year I bought the boxed set of the illustrated editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and a second-hand copy of Journeys of Frodo by Barbara Strachey (a wonderful book that I firmly believe ought to be reprinted).
Those are some beautiful editions and I am happy to see that you have shared your love of Tolkien with your son. Welcome! 😁
Right now the same counter is at ~255, so the current rate is 11 per 70 min or about 9-10 per hour. Seems that most of the hardcore collectors who wanted to buy early have gotten it, but it will be interesting to see the number of sales over the next 6 hours or so as some parts of the world had the release time in the middle of the night (and potentially areas that are resource strong as well in terms of purchasing power).
Edit: Okay, it is now at 265, so this kind of analysis is not really reliable as it can jump at any moment.
Quick question: right now on the page for this item, it says "The max quantity for this item is limited to 1 per purchase", but there was some earlier text on the landing page that said one per person. Is it possible to order more than one copy per person, just as separate purchases?

Shipping was free in the UK. My copies were both free shipping.

You can try, not sure if they are enforcing the one per person.
Did you get more than one copy (since you wrote "copies")? How did that work out?
I bought one copy, and one of my family bought a second copy. I got them both delivered to my address, though.
