Not a 1st State, hard to tell from the images provided, but most likely a 4th state. Would need additional images to tell which variant of the 4th state it is.

Agreed on all points here, not to mention I've never seen a J in his signature look like this. Also the e & n in "Tolkien" are spaced which you don't really ever see. This is not a real signature IMO.
