Hi,

First time posting.
I wonder if anyone know about this book I came across.
It's a 1st edition 'Puffin Hobbit' from 1961 but it's a hardcover instead of the standard paperback.
The book's binding must be a library binding and the book is in good condition.
Can anyone enlighten me as to the potential value of this book?
Also, I'm new to looking for rare books and I wonder if a library bound book tends to have a higher or lower value than the equivalent hardback book?

Thanks in advance!

David

Hi and welcome
I used to have a similar copy
Yes it’s a library bound copy and IMHO it is worth less than the paperback version. I personal don’t like library markings and it would have to be something special to change my mind.
This said a nice book and a good starter for collecting books

As regarding value, a really good paperback is in the low hundreds of pounds, this is probably 10-20 pounds as an unusual item.

Thanks for the info,
Just started looking at interesting editions of Tolkien, there's so much to find out.
I'll be keeping my eye out for the dark corners of old bookshops, that's where I found this one!

This'll be one for the bookshelf, interesting artwork and looks good!

Thanks again

I like it as an interesting oddity. I wouldn't pay a lot for it, but equally I wouldn't pay a lot for the paperback, either -- they are two-a-penny, despite the way the market values them.
